If it is still not working, continue to other blocks and telephone jacks. Once you have make sure it is the phone line system other than the telephone itself’ problem, the next step is to test you’re the wiring. A variety of things can cause the telephone wiring to crash such as improperly touching wires, mice eating cable or an electrical surge frying a telephone jack.

Troubleshooting Connectivity Issues in Your Home

Try unplugging the phone and letting it sit for about 10 minutes. Try taking the battery out and then unplugging the base from the power and phone line. Remove the working phone and its cord from the jack. Keep in mind that not an independent circuit is necessary for a phone line to work properly. That circuit shouldn’t touch any other phone lines.

Try to examine for touching bare wire or loose wires by opening up the outlets throughout the next phase of your troubleshooting. Disconnect all of the phones, fax machines, and modems in your home. The phone company did some work in our neighborhood and replaced our older box with one like you describe. That was while we were living in another state. Still, it is a great feeling to tell the phone company representative you have checked and the problem is a dead phone company line. It was a big help to me to know the red and green wires are key , and the voltage should be about 50 VDC.

These wires are usually color-coded green, orange, red and yellow. Green is the central wire that carries the signal, orange and red are individual wires on either side of the green wire, and yellow is the ground or protective wire. This configuration is called tip-ring-ring-sleeve . It is usually located on the wall or at the bottom of the phone itself. I disconnected and re-connected the electrical connectors of all 3 phones in the house.

An industry slang term for ringing voltage is "jingle juice." You will only need to touch the wires or internal parts of a ringing telephone once in order to understand this. What is a telephone line?

Go outside your home and look for the cables attached to your home. You’ll see a thin black cable that runs from a box on the telephone pole to your home. Locate this cable so you can find your phone box. If your main socket looks like the picture below, you'll need to get in touch.

This is a box that was installed by the phone company when service was first installed on the house.

This is not covered by most carriers, so you'll have to either do it yourself or hire a technician. If the phone works on the other jack, then the original phone jack is likely faulty. I mentioned in the last panel that some newer telephone boxes do have a modular jack inside. A lot of buildings will have the older style boxes.

How to Check a Phone Line

The terminals inside are usually threaded brass posts with wires wrapped around them and a nut with washers to tighten over the wires. Radio Shack does sell a pigtail with a male modular jack on one end and four loose wires on the other end. The wires have crowsfeet terminals on the end of each. When I did not have a phone available, I used this pigtail and a voltmeter to test lines inside and outside the house. The box you describe can also open to reveal the wiring inside, I believe; but, the modular jack makes for a fast way to check for the proper voltage and a functioning line.
