We have been coming to the Big Island for over a decade and often go snorkeling with Fairwinds. We have enjoyed the morning snorkeling cruise several times over the years with family our kids and grandkids, which has always been a highlight. Enjoyed a great show of spinner dolphins and even some pilot whales.

The only type of storage available is the space around your seating area. There will always be one crew member on board at all times, so it is advised that you keep your belongings with you rather then leaving them in your car. The Fair Wind II, Hula Kai, and Capt. Jack were updated with a sophisticated, dark blue paint in 2015.
Morning departures are at 9am from Keauhou Harbor, about 10 minutes south of downtown Kailua-Kona. The vessel has recently switched to a plant-based vegan menu for both breakfast and lunch. Manta RayOn the Manta Ray Night Snorkel Tour, you’ll get a chance to spend over an hour swimming alongside gorgeous manta rays. Deluxe Captain Cook Snorkeling Tour at Kealakekua Bay - Fair Wind Cruises
The snorkeling is always fabulous, as is the crew and the wonderful food along the way. To our delight, they did away with the traditional burgers and hot dogs – replacing everything with various plant-based sandwiches & salads. BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich – OMG – so tasty – who would have thought?! Highly recommend, not just for the snorkeling – but the food is above and beyond.
In order to check their island snorkeling experiences off your bucket list, you’ll need to book your spot ASAP. They often stay booked solid for weeks in advance, after all. So, make sure to reserve your tour as soon as you know you’ll be on the island. Fortunately, making reservations is as easy as pie through the online system on their website. Just scroll to your tour destination, select your preferred date, and indicate how many people will be in your group. The Fair Wind II is fun for the whole family, no matter what your age or experience.
The Fair Wind II kicks it up a notch with waterslides and a high-jump platform, while the Hula Kai comes with theater-style seating. The wide steps on each side of the boat provide easy access into the ocean. The water is so clear here that the reef makes the ocean look like you are swimming in a sea of gemstones. The reef here is very healthy, the water is very clear and there are lots and lots of fish. Enjoy a peaceful moment watching Keauhou Bay, where the rhythms of people and the ocean come together. This bay is a community gathering place, allowing key access to calm seas in South Kona for people who enjoy ocean activities. Watch paddleboarders, kayakers, boaters, swimmers, and fishermen all launch out to enjoy the ocean world.
This luxurious appearance is consistent with the first-class activities offered by Fair Wind Cruises. This award-winning company has been providing exclusive Hawaii snorkeling excursions to Kealakekua Bay for 31 years. View these gentle giants in Keauhou Bay firsthand as they perform mesmerizing acrobatic maneuvers beneath you while feeding on plankton. For experienced snorkelers seeking a unique adventure and a bit of adrenaline, this truly is a must-do activity!
UV protection sunglasses are definitely a great idea as well. Upon boarding the boat, the captain will let you know what to expect and then set off toward your destination. In 2020, Fair Wind Cruises pledged to elevate environmental needs and act as a leader in ocean stewardship.
Looking forward to our second snorkel on the morning cruise tomorrow. The destination is the same and the snorkel time is ALMOST the same. Lunch is not served, which accounts in part for the shorter tour time. For a truly unique experience, join us aboard Fair Wind’s sister vessel, Hula Kai. This powerful 55’ catamaran is full of first-class comforts like individual theater-style seating and scrumptious food.
Part of that mission meant becoming the first tour company in the state of Hawaii to offer plant-based meals to guests on excursions. As leaders in ocean tourism, we take the responsibility of solving environmental issues seriously. With an eye to the future, our focus is to provide an example for marine mammal and reef health education. Exclusively for the Manta Ray snorkel, they began serving hot & homemade plant-based soups with dinner rolls and hot cocoa. The Fair Wind II is perfect for snorkeling, swimming, sightseeing, and enjoying the calm, cerulean blue waters of historic Kealakekua Bay, where the Captain Cook Monument is located.
The boat was comfortable and clean and there was plenty of room for our gear. My husband and I are omnivores, but we thoroughly enjoyed the vegan lunch and bre...akfast! The snorkeling was so much fun and we were fortunate enough to have perfect weather. We brought our own snorkel equipment and fins, but the boat was equipped with all of that plus life vests, pool noodles, inner tubes, sun screen and anti fog spray for masks. Everyone was so caring and helpful and made sure we felt comfortable and safe in the water and out. We will be sure to book with Fair Wind Cruises again when we travel to the Big Island.
